The Youth Mental Health Project, funded by Operation Days Work (ODW) in Norway and implemented by Mental Health Uganda in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Uganda, is making a significant impact in schools across Gulu and Wakiso districts. Over three years, this initiative aims to build mental health awareness among over 10,000 students, teachers, and school administrators in 8 partner schools and their communities, targeting youth aged 13-19.
At the heart of the project are ‘Mental Health Champions’—students leading the charge in their schools using youth-friendly approaches like music, drama, and social media. These champions, along with community volunteers who have lived experience with mental health challenges, normalize mental health conversations by sharing personal stories and offering basic psychosocial support to peers in need.
The project empowers students by increasing their knowledge of mental health issues, reducing stigma, and creating safe spaces for open discussions. Monthly reflection meetings ensure that the voices of the youth are heard, allowing them to shape the project’s direction and ensure it meets their needs.
By integrating awareness campaigns, installing talking compounds, running essay competitions, and offering mental health resources, the project is creating a future where mental health is openly discussed and support is accessible.
