Mental Health Uganda through its project “Access to Health is My Right” has rehabilitated over 500 homeless women with mental disabilities on the streets of Kampala since 2018. The women are identified from the streets, rehabilitated, reunited with their families and then skilled to enable their full reintegration into the community.
In a bid to create awareness around the project and share lessons learnt, we organized a Symposium under the theme: “Leaving No One Behind: Homeless Women with Mental Disability Matter Too.”
The Symposium showcased what the project has been doing since its inception, showcasing success stories of the women who have benefited from the project, showcasing some of the products and skills they have gained/ made from the skilling component of the project among others.
We also held a press conference to share a statement on the state of homeless women with mental disabilities as the rest of the world celebrates women day.
The rehabilitated women shared their experiences, thanking MHU for taking them in when no one else would and giving them a chance at a new life.
They urged the public to embrace people with mental health problems and avoid discrimination,
